How This Works
Food waste CO₂ = weight × 2.5kg CO₂e/kg (mixed household waste average). When organic food decomposes in landfill, it produces methane — 28× more potent than CO₂. The UK average is ~75kg of food wasted per person per year (WRAP 2023). Financial cost at ~£4.50/kg wasted food value.
Use-by vs best-before: "use-by" is a safety date — follow it. "Best-before" is a quality guide — most foods are fine days or weeks past this if they smell and look correct. Freeze food before its use-by date if you can't eat it in time. Batch-cook and freeze leftovers. The Love Food Hate Waste website has freezing guides for almost every food type.
